2019 marks the fifth annual week-long collaboration between members of Decoda (Carnegie Hall's affiliate ensemble) and a folk ensemble creating and performing music together in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. "The music will be chosen and composed to be a direct celebration of the UP's landscape, culture, and heritage," says Beethoven and Banjos Artistic Director and UP native Evan Premo.

MENDELSSOHN: Symphony No. 4 in A Major, Op. 90 (“Italian”)
The Decoda | Skidmore Chamber Music Institute is a 2 week summer intensive for young musicians offering multiple performance opportunities and meaningful community engagement. Under the guidance of Decoda artists, students will learn how to fully engage their audiences and communities through scripted interactive chamber music performances while improving their own performance and public speaking skills. Program participants will live on the beautiful campus of Skidmore College and will rehearse and perform at the state of the art Arthur Zankel Music Center.

This evening emphasizes the musical voices of composers born with synesthesia, or those for whom specific colors play an important role in their creative process. With works by Andy Akiho, George Crumb, Olivier Messiaen, Alexander Scriabin, and improvisatory interludes by Cory Smythe, this colorful program is framed by a dialogue between natural and supernatural themes.
A quartet of Decoda musicians presents a seminar on engaging audiences to students at Philadelphia's prestigious Curtis Institute of Music.
